Introduction

Hongik University is currently undertaking exchange programs with outstanding overseas universities through the establishment of friendly relationships. University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) has been continuously running an exchange program with Hongik University since it initially enrolled students in 1989.

In addition, Hongik University has been undertaking exchange programs with diverse universities such as Utah State University, University of Kansas located in the US, RWTH Aachen University in Germany, École Nationale Supérieure des beaux-Arts(ENSBA) and Université de La Rochelle both located in France, Aalto University School of Art & Design (UIAH) and HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences located in Finland, Swinburne University of Technology located in Australia, University of Tsukuba, Musashino Art University, and Tama Art University located in Japan, and others.

In addition, Hongik University is also working on a dual degree system with its two partner universities located in the US (Washington State University (WSU) & Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT)), to enable students to acquire degrees at both Hongik University and its partner schools.

‘Hongik Student Exchange Program’ is a part of the international academic exchange programs that provide students with an opportunity to experience and study foreign language, society and culture at overseas universities.

Students are able to study at a reasonably low tuition rate, so as to acquire credits for either 1 semester or 1 year at overseas universities sharing the student exchange program to gain valuable foreign experience. Students who plan to apply for the exchange program need to prepare appropriate language scores, in particular TOEFL.

The dual degree system can be defined as a system whereby a student who has completed more than 4 semesters at Hongik University can register semester records at both Hongik University and the overseas university. Students who have credits acquired from the overseas university need to seek approval of the credit from Hongik University to satisfy requirements for the degree, and vice versa. Hongik University is currently sharing a dual degree system with Washington State University (WSU) and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), both located in US.

Dual degree system participants are able to acquire degrees from both Universities in a relatively short amount of time, and take advantage of the formal bachelor’s degree program from a US located university. This can help the student with employment, or admission into further education programs, gaining the advantages of exchange student experience and exposure to foreign languages.

The Office of Student Affairs has been providing students with diverse opportunities to volunteer for community services in a number of overseas countries during summer and fall vacations annually.

Hongik University students are annually sent to a number of Asian countries such as Mongolia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Nepal. Students gain valuable experience by working together harmoniously with citizens in other nations. Furthermore, the university also provides support for international community service by offering community service credits and international exchange scholarships to participants.

Hongik University has been carrying out diverse major-related overseas training programs in outstanding overseas universities each vacation with the purpose of developing global leaders, and also has been providing credit recognition and international exchange scholarships to easily enable students to participate in the exchange program. In addition, Hongik University recognizes credits based on overseas language studies or overseas internship programs in which the students have individually participated in at their own cost.
